Tezpur College is one of the premier educational institution on the northern landscape of the mighty Brahmaputra. The college came into existence in 1965 just on the foothills of the Agnigarh, a small lowly elevated Archean outcrop. In the year 1973, considering the importance of the subjects, the college authority introduced Geography for Pre-University students. In the subsequent years the department becomes a full flagged department and offering Major and general courses for the aspirant degree students. Since the inception all the students and faculty members are engaged in various social and environmental activities besides regular classroom teaching. For the academic up-liftman of the students the department is always interested to establish linkages with National and International institutions, organisations, and organise workshops, seminars, etc. Students and Faculty members of the department have taken part in various academic and cultural exchange programmes at various parts of the country. As social responsibility the department is involved with community development, hazard and disaster awareness and management, flood relief distribution programmes, education among school students and career guidance programmes. With a motto of "Clean and Green Environment", the department is involved with a number of environmental programmes like awareness on Plastic waste & MSWM Tezpur. environment restoration through preservation, conservation and sustainable management of environment, cleaning and plantation programme in heritage sites of the city, adoption of such sites for development tourism, etc.

We aim to cultivate a deep understanding of the complex interactions between humans and their environments through innovative teaching methods, cutting-edge research, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our vision is to inspire and empower students to become critical thinkers, skilled geospatial analysts, and proactive global citizens who can address the pressing environmental, social, and economic challenges of our time.
Facilities
The department has one Seminar library, The library contains on of the richest collections of books and Journals of Geography. At present it has nearly 600 books (reference and text books) and Research Journals.
The department is facilitated with two laboratories including one Remote Sensing and GIS laboratory with 8 computers, one server with GIS and Image Processing Software. WiFi internet connectivity, Scanner, GPS, 1 Printer. GIS software like Super Map Desktop 7c, Super Map Express and image processing software ERDAS EMAGINE 2013. Quantum GIS, ILWIS, are available in the laboratory. The GIS laboratory and Digital Classroom was inagurated by Dr. Charu Saharia Nath, Ex-HOD, Department of Geography and Principal, Tezpur College on 6th September, 2012.
The department is also equipped with one digital classrom with modern audio-visual teaching aids like OPH, LCD Projectors and Smart Boards, etc. Regular classes are held in the digital classroom using the internet facilities, smart board and LCD Projector.
